چکیده

Paul Bach Y Rita [1] is the precursor of sensory substitutions. He started thirty years ago using visuotactile prostheses with the intent of satisfying blind people. These prostheses, called Tactile Vision Substitution Systems (TVSS), transform a sensory input from a given modality (vision) into another modality (touch). These new systems seemed to induce quasi-visual perceptions. One of the author’s interests dealt with the understanding of the coupling between actions and sensations in perception mechanisms [4]. Throughout his search, he noticed that the subjects had to move the camera themselves in order to recognise a 3D target-object or a figure placed in front of them. Our work consists in understanding how sensory information provided by a visuo-tactile prosthesis can be used for motor behaviour. In this aim, we used the most simple substitution device (one photoreceptor coupled with one tactile stimulator) in order to control and enrich our knowledge of the ties between perception and action.

Other ways of seeing: From behavior to neural mechanisms in the online “visual” control of action with sensory substitution

Vision is the dominant sense for perception-for-action in humans and other higher primates. Advances in sight restoration now utilize the other intact senses to provide information that is normally sensed visually through sensory substitution to replace missing visual information. Sensory substitution devices translate visual information from a sensor, such as a camera or ultrasound device, int...

The Use of a Distal-to-Tactile Sensory Substitution Interface Does Not Lead to Extension of Body Image

A range of studies in the past decade and a half indicate significant impacts of tool use on body image. In cases of intentional action, contractions of near space or experienced extensions of limbs have been shown when using tools such as rakes. It remains unclear whether the changes in body image are effected by the tool enabling perception at a distance or action/manipulation of the environm...

Perception With Compensatory Devices: From Sensory Substitution to Sensorimotor Extension

Sensory substitution devices provide through an unusual sensory modality (the substituting modality, e.g., audition) access to features of the world that are normally accessed through another sensory modality (the substituted modality, e.g., vision). In this article, we address the question of which sensory modality the acquired perception belongs to. We have recourse to the four traditional cr...

Conscious Sensation, Conscious Perception and Sensorimotor Theories of Consciousness

This article explores the hypothesis that the differences between our conscious sensations (color, sound, smell, etc.) could be linked to the different ways in which our senses process and structure information. It is also proposed that the organization of our conscious sensations into a conscious perception of a three-dimensional world could be linked to our mastery of sensorimotor contingenci...

Multisensory integration, sensory substitution and visual rehabilitation.

Sensory substitution has advanced remarkably over the past 35 years since first introduced to the scientific literature by Paul Bach-y-Rita. In this issue dedicated to his memory, we describe a collection of reviews that assess the current state of neuroscience research on sensory substitution, visual rehabilitation, and multisensory processes.
